As
of December 1999, there was a total population of 200,193 persons in Phuket province,
which include 100,297 males, and 99,896 females. In Muang Phuket Municipality alone, there
was a total population of 69,068 persons, under the areas of 12 square kilometers,
with a population density of 5,756 persons/square kilometers. In Kra Thu District, there
was a total population of 11,467 persons, under the areas of 16.445 square
kilometers, with the population density of 699 persons/square
kilometers. There was a total population of 160,954 persons outside the municipal areas,
with a population density of 313 persons/square kilometers.

districts with highest numbers of population include Muang District of 153,120 persons or
53,389 households, followed by Thalang District of 60,641 persons or 17,332
households, and Kra Thu District of 27,728 persons or 14,441 households. |

| According
to the fourth round survey on population employment situation during November 1999, it was
found that Phuket province maintained the total population of 200,193 persons. About
47,998 of these population or 24% were below 13 years old; meanwhile, the other 152,195
persons or 76% were up to 13 years old. |
| Among
the ones up to 13 years old of 152,195 persons, there were about 97,384 persons (64%)
under current workforce, and the other 54,811 persons (36%) were not under workforce. For
the ones under current workforce, there were 95,853 persons (98.43%) under employment, and
the other 1,534 persons (1.57%) were unemployed. |
| When
classified by industries, most workforces mostly worked in service sector or 36,684
persons (38.27%), followed by commercial sector or 24,188 persons (25.23%). Also, most of
the ones under workforce are under junior primary educationlevel or 26,480 persons
(27.63%). |

| During
July 1998-June 1999, it was reported by the total of 3,255 employers that there were the
overall of 1,003 job applicants, with only 324 persons getting hired or 32.30% of the
total applicants and 9.95% of the total vacancy posts. |
|

|
| The
meeting of Wages Committee, Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare has approved to increase
the minimum wages of Baht 3 more all areas countrywide, effective from January 1,
2001. As a result, the minimum wages in Phuket province increased from Baht 162 per day to
Baht 165 per day. |
