The Monarchy

k.jpg (9479 bytes)The King was born in December, 1927 , in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where his father, His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkhla was studying medicine at Harvard University, H.M.

In 1935 H.M. King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) abdicated the throne. His ten-year old nephew, the present King's older brother, succeeded him. Cut off from his homeland by World War II the young King, H.M. Ananda Mahidol, remained in Switzerland to complete his studies. In 1946 he passed away while on a visit to Thailand. His younger brother, H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, then only 19 years old, was chosen to succeed him.

His Majesty immediately changed his course of study from science to law and political science to better prepare him self for the lifetime of work ahead. He completed his education in Switzerland at the Ecole Nouvelle de la Suisse Romande, Chailly sur Lausanne and received a Bachelieres Lettres diploma from the Gymnase Classique Cantonal of Lausanne.

In 1949 His Majesty became engaged to Mom Rajawongse Sirikit Kitiyakara. They were married in Thailand on April 28, 1950. Following a short honeymoon in Hua Hin, H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej was formally crowned on May 5, 1950. H.M. the King and Queen have three daughters and one son.

The Golden Jubilee of His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej was celebrated in 1995-1996 upon the 50th anniversary of his ascention to the throne. His Majesty King Bhumipol Adulyadej is the ninth king of the Chakri Dynasty. As a constitutional monarch, he maintains neutrality at times of crisis, but his advice is actively sought among politicians, administrators and national planners alike.

Thanks to King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit has engaged their life to help the Thai people and to develop the country. At the same time they work hard on protecting the old culture and the nature from over development and forest shoveling. This has made that the Thai people love their royal family and highly respect them.
