Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC)

Marine Biological Research Centre Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC), Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives was established under bilateral agreement between Thai and Danish governments after the 5th Thai-Danish Expedition operation along the Andaman Sea coast of Thailand in 1966. The PMBC (8.4 hectares) locates at the south-east of Phuket Province. The bilateral agreement (5 years) was signed by the two governments on October 16th, 1968. This was followed by a Second Agreement (4 years) and Third Agreement (4 years) with less contribution from Danish Government. The official agreement terminated in 1983.

OBJECTIVES OF THE CENTER

The objectives of the Center are to carry out research in the field of marine science, including fishery biology, of the coastal waters of Thailand to such an extent that the knowledge will be useful for the development and conservation of living resources in these waters to the benefit of future generations and to promote training and education of students and scientists both Thai and foreigners in the field of marine biology

 

  

ORGANIZATION
The Center presently organize into 6 unites which are:

1. Administration Unit
2. Marine Biological Productivity Unit
3. Marine Ecology Unit
4. Fishery Oceanography Unit
5. Reference Collection Unit
6. Phuket Aquarium Unit
(Each unit is divided into 4-5 Sub-units)

Phuket Marine Biological Center is responsible for experiment/research on science, biological, marine ecology, and duties to assigned.

Note:
Phuket Aquarium, more than one hundred species of sea life (many of them taken from the waters around Phuket) are on display at the aquarium.

Open daily 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the aquarium is located at Cape Panawa on the extreme southeast side of Phuket.

Admission is 5 Baht for children and 20 Baht for adults. A Songteaw (local bus) can be taken from the Talad Soht (Fresh market).
